'Days Of Defiance'
2010
Review By Mick 'the beard' Staley
Firewind's previous album, 'The Premonition', was such a good album, that I was very apprehensive about a new Firewind album, as bands tend to rest on their laurels after producing great works.
I needn't have worried as they seemed to have gone up another gear! 'Days Of Defiance' didn't grab me by the throat immediately like 'The Premonition' did, because it is not as much full on power metal but technically it is a whole lot better.
The opener 'The Ark Of Lies' starts off with Spanish style guitaring then rips into ball breaking riffs that blow you away, and the rest of the album tends to carry on in the same vein, with the highs and lows blending sublimly.
Appollo's voice seems to get better everytime I hear him as he reaches the high notes with consumate ease.
I can see the fans now, singing along to Firewind's anthemic trademark songs, which this album is full of.
The guys have now raised the bar, not only for themselves, but for all to follow.
This is classic power metal with 21st Century riffage. Firewind will have to be on top of their game from now on to keep up this standard, but with Gus now honing his craft alongside Ozzy, then things can only get better!
'Days Of Defiance' is out in October and will be followed up by a tour, so check local press and of course here on MGTV
