'Sepultura'

Review By Jim Suffolk

The last time I saw Sepultura was at Hammerfest and I was expecting an amazing performance from the metal giants. With Gama Bomb tagging along as the main support and Shrapnel being added as local support I eagerly awaited the gig.

Shrapnel got off to a fantastic start. They really got the crowd going and by the end of the set everyone was cheering for them, definitely a band to look out for. Just a full on thrash approach but they were the perfect openers for Sepultura. They even threw in a Heaven and Hell medley at the end of their set. Top marks from me.

Gama Bomb were up next, I wasn’t overly sure on them to begin with but after their set I went straight over to the merch stand to pick up both the cd’s they had on sale. Starting off a bit shakily, mainly due to the sound gremlins they were soon on top form. Churning out songs left right and centre they really played their arses off. The set included Hammer Slammer, O.C.P and Zombie Blood Nightmare. They got the crowd going the entire time they were on stage, they weren’t afraid to have a laugh either. Gama Bomb in my opinion are in the same position as Evile, they’re currently getting on plenty of awesome tours and I can’t see it being long before they have a bigger following and do their own large scale uk tour. Amazing show and I can’t wait to catch them again!

By the time Sepultura’s intro started the venue was jam packed. I don’t think I’ve been to a gig at the waterfront this full before. Starting off with the A-Lex intro and bursting straight into “Moloko Mesto” the band are well and truly on fire. Even after the first song the entire crowd is yelling for the band and I think the band were amazed with the reception they got. Next up was “Arise”, many circle pits were started and the band kept churning out hit after hit. There was a good mix of old and new songs. Derrick Green does an amazing job on the Max era songs, the band had a jam/medley if really old school songs and played “Escape To The Void”. Any doubts about Derrick Green taking over from Max should be forgotten about; the guy is an amazing front man and fits in perfectly with Sepultura. Half way through the set and the crowd are still going mental, the band are mixing it up well, playing a new song then an old one. Towards the end of the set we get treated to an AC/DC medley and some banter from the band. Derrick taunts the crowd and pratts about for a bit and the crowd love it. Playing another couple of songs including “Inner Self” the band walk off and on for the encore. Finishing up with “Roots Bloody Roots” the night comes to an unfortunate ending. Sepultura absolutely killed it tonight and I cannot wait for the next opportunity to see them in such an intimate venue.

The band were using a professional video camera to record the show tonight and with the rumours of a live DVD being passed around I would suggest that everybody buy it. Considering how amazing the band were it’s a show I can easily call one of the best I’ve ever been to.
