UNEARTH
Saturday 14th February 2009
interview By James'Hammy' Hammond
After a disturbingly short, traffic free drive down to Brixton academy I got myself one of the greasiest KFC’s I’ve had then marched on to the venue.
After being walked around the backstage area for 5 minutes or so I was then found a quiet area to interview Unearth bass player “John Maggard.
MG : How is the tour going so far?
JM : Well this is the 4th show on the tour and it’s been great. Everyone went out last night and partied away till the early hours. Its been great fun and no-ones been arrested yet so I guess everything’s going fine haha.
MG : Any highlights so far?
JM : Well at the party last night everyone was drinking way too much, throwing up all over the bar and having a good time so I suppose that was cool. Aside from that we’ve been touring in a van so we haven’t really done too much.
MG : No low points? Nobodies been arrested at least
JM : Not that I can think of. I suppose the only bad thing was that last night my whole bass rig went out so that was a bit of a bummer. We can still put it through the PA but im playing blind because I cant hear myself. Other than that it’s all been fine.
MG : How is it to be on the road with Lamb Of God and Dimmu Borgir?
JM : Well we’ve all toured with each other a few times and played festivals with each other etc so it’s basically just like hanging out and drinking with your friends and playing a show afterwards. It’s been really fun and we hope to tour again soon.
MG : Seen anything interesting this side of the ocean?
JM : Not really actually haha. I know a few of the guys from all the bands went out to central London today to go see the landmarks but I’ve been here a few times now so there’s not much left to see really.
MG : Where’s your favourite place to tour in the UK?
JM :Probably Scotland, purely for the landscape and the scenery. It’s just really cool up there and there’s loads of castles and amazing scenes that we don’t get in America.
MG:
How is your set looking for tonight? Can we expect much new material from “The March”?
JM:
Well we’ve been playing different sets each night. Moving the songs about and swapping this for that to keep it fresh. We’ve played some songs that we haven’t played for a few years on this tour and it’s been great to play them again. We’re definitely playing “My Will Be Done” and “Crow Killer” from the new album and we’ll probably throw in 1 or 2 more. We like to keep it fresh.
MG:
What are you guys up to after this tour?
JM:
Well after this European tour we head out to Australia, which will be awesome. We get treated like royalty over there so that’s cool!
It’s speculated at the moment that we’ll be doing a few tours in American. Nothings definite yet but we might be supporting Testament which would be fucking insane. But apart from that not much really. We’re doing quite a lot of tours in America but we’ll probably come back over here for some more because we love the crowds over here. The atmosphere in any UK show we’ve played has always been amazing.
MG:
Cheers for the interview and I look forward to your set tonight!
And with that we were finding our way out of the building when Lamb Of God walked past. Literally being Hero’s of mine I froze on the spot when is aw them come round the corner.
I awaited Unearths set greatly and strolled around Brixton for a little bit trying to find something other than a greasy KFC to have to eat!
